How We Became Halloween Artists

One of the questions we are asked most often is
When did you start painting Halloween?
It all began with decorating for Halloween with our Yard Signs!
We always enjoyed decorating for holidays! Along came the internet and Ebay and our passion for Holiday art grew. The photos below show how we sold holiday yard art before the internet!

Ebay opened door for us by allowing us to sell Nationwide. We started selling holiday signs and that was the beginning of a wonderful venture. We have met people from all over the Country, Canada, the United Kingdom and other countries. We have also made friends that are also Halloween artists and they are all the nicest people you could ever want to hang out with. Sometimes I think I spend more time on the internet talking to my friends and customers then I do in real life. The perfect solution for a happy artist. Doing what I love to do, doesn't even seem like work! We are blessed to have so many friends and regular customers. Without our customers I would have to get a "real job". Instead I stay at home and play all day. :)

The Ghost That Almost Made Us Rich

The Ghost that almost made us rich. In 1995 Ron designed this littleGhost out of coroplast (corrugated plastic). It was light weight and with fishing tackle as a hanger the little ghost would spin when the wind blew. It appeared as if the Ghost were looking at you. In 1998 I researched companies who sold this type of product in Wal Marts. I could imagine our little ghost in Wal Marts all across America. We might actually make a lot of money from it. The Company, Impact Plastics in Minnesota said they were interested in looking at it. So we drove all the way to Minnesota from Memphis which was where we were living at the time. Every time we had taken our little ghosts to Craft Shows we sold every one we brought. We charged $5.00 a piece. Most people would buy a couple and then come back for more. So we knew they would sell.

We were on our way, Impact Plastics made a deal with us to receive royalties. They would have to sell thousands for us to make a lot of money but we were sure they would. We were so excited, until the Ghost came out in Wal Mart the next year. They didn't quite get the concept of it spinning hanging from trees which is how we used them. 10 or more hanging a tree made a pretty display. They changed the design as you can see below. They made them to fit on stakes and to top it off they made it into a cutesy waving ghost. Sometimes simple is the best. We did make a little money but they weren't big sellers because they sold them to fit on a metal stake you put in the ground. I think they missed the whole point, they were meant to hang and they had to be perfectly balanced. When they added the arm waving the extra weight stopped them from spinning. We'll never know if they would have sold more if they had used our original design.

Artist Feature for Byrum Art!

The Halloween Hunt explores haunted places and spaces, created by Marla Hinkle of Fayetteville, AR has contacted Ron and I and wants to do a feature article on us! How exciting. She is going to drive all the way here for a live interview! This is a new Halloween website and Marla says "I have written about artists for local newspapers; seven years at The Morning News and nearly four years at the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. Coverage at the newspapers was mainly focused on Northwest Arkansas, but now that I have my own Web site, I would love to take the opportunity to travel from Fayetteville for this feature story."

Of course we will say yes! And we wish Marla much success in her newest venture!

If you are a Halloween artist and live in Arkansas email me at sunnybyrum@aol.com
and I will tell Marla about you.

Whimsical Witches or Tricks If You Dare!

New Listings from Byrum Art, Click on Pics to be transported to Ebay!

Fall's Glory After Summer's Grace

This is the most beautiful time of the year in our gardens. After nurturing our plants and flowers all summer they reward us with boundless beauty, morning glories gracefully draping over the mailbox, the moonflowers have climbed their long trek up the lattice where blossoms as big as our hand open at night and the scent, oh how incredible! The humming birds are busy visiting the four o'clock, petunias, phlox and feeders we put out for them! The wind chimes blow from the breezes shifting back and forth from the south one day and the north the next. Soon the hills will be dressed in all their fall glory! There is the smell of fires being lit as neighbors begin to burn the leaves that are falling. Yes fall has arrived, summer is ending. The sunsets are extraordinary and the tomato vines have been plentiful with their sweet little cherry tomatoes, so sweet we pick them and eat them right in the garden.

Craft Room Make Over

While doing some repairs to the ceiling in my craft room we discovered that the ceiling had been dropped at some time and sheet rocked, probably in the 50's or 60's. Our house was built in 1908 and were we in for a surprise. The entire house has 10 foot ceilings and bead board hiding behind the sheet rock ceilings. We plan on tearing all the Sheetrock out and exposing the beautiful bead board and this is the first room we have completed. Look at the dramatic difference Ron made to this room. This room is on the front of our house and has windows on every wall. Because we have a split level house this room is also about 12 feet off the ground and the room is my favorite room in the house!
